Immunization Requirements

Wherever you attend dental school, you will have to complete a number of health and immunization requirements. At The Ohio State University College of Dentistry your admission and / or enrollment may be jeopardized if you do not meet these requirements by the deadlines stated in your acceptance letter.

The following are REQUIRED by The Ohio State University College of Dentistry. Please start on these immunization requirements as soon as possible and maintain documentation of each.

HEPATITIS B
The Hepatitis B vaccine is required.

IMPORTANT --- THIS TAKES SIX MONTHS TO COMPLETE --- please start this series asap !!!
This vaccine is administered in three separate injections over a six-month period. Arrangements must be made with your personal physician to begin the series and for follow-up. One to two months after the Hepatitis B vaccines have been administered, a Hepatitis B surface antibody blood test proving immunity is also required.

IMPORTANT --- If you have previously had your HEP B series, please request a Hepatitis B surface antibody blood test immediately.  If you do not have antibodies, you will need to repeat the series.  Do not assume because you have had the series that you have the antibodies.

CHICKENPOX TITER
A blood titer is required even if you have a documented history of exposure to chickenpox. If your titer reading is negative or equivocal, you must complete a two part series varicella (chickenpox) vaccine.

TDAP (Adult Tetanus/Diphtheria/Pertussis)
Tdap is required for all students.  This vaccine includes acellular pertussis (whooping cough).  This is substituted for the usual booster dose of Td.  Td should then be used for later booster doses.  For more information on this vaccine, visit www.cdc.gov/vaccines/pubs/vis/downloads/vis-td-tdap.pdf

MMR (Measles, Mumps, and Rubella)
Two (2) doses are required. If individual vaccines were given, two doses of measles, one dose of rubella, and one dose of mumps required. First immunization must be after the first birthday. You may substitute titers showing immunity if no documentation is available.

PPD TEST (Intradermal Tuberculosis Test)
This test Is required and must be administered prior to the start of dental school between July and August. A tine test is not acceptable. Current chest x-ray required if PPD reading is positive.
