Tuition, Fees and Student Budgets
Every institution that awards federal aid must develop a student budget also referred to as "the cost of attendance." Each year we look at the cost of a dental student's education per their year of enrollment to determine the maximum amount that can be awarded for the academic year. The student budget consists of tuition, fees, books and supplies, and living expenses. It does not include credit card debt and/or car payments. (Students are strongly encouraged to reduce their debt load before entering dental school).
The College of Medicine's Office of Student Financial Services has developed a budgeting presentation titled, “Budgeting Made Simple,” that illustrates how you can complete a monthly budget plan. The College of Dentistry encourages the use of this helpful financial planning tool.
If after completing a budget plan you determine that your expenses are greater than our cost of attendance, please e-mail a copy of your monthly budget to Tammy Lewis at lewis.36@osu.edu.
The following budget amounts are based on projected costs for the 2011-2012 academic year for a first-year dental student. The living allowance is based on a modest lifestyle, and it assumes the student will share housing costs with a roommate. Dental students are enrolled in 10 or more credit hours and are considered full-time students.

Out-of-state students are eligible to apply for state residency after living in Ohio for 12 consecutive months, or they may apply for instant residency under certain circumstances. Students will begin their second academic year the summer term in June 2012. If you are planning to apply for in-state residency beginning in the summer term, you will need to be an Ohio resident by June 2012. Adjustments will be made to your Financial Aid award if you need an additional quarter of non-resident tuition.
Out-of-state students who wish to become Ohio residents can submit an application to the University Registrar's office. In general, married students whose spouse has gained Ohio employment may be able to obtain in-state residency during their first year of dental school. Unmarried students are eligible to apply for state residency once they have financially supported themselves for one full year. For specific information on how to obtain in-state residency, please visit the Registrar's residency web page or see Michael Murray the College Registrar.
