College of Dentistry Featured in the ADA News

November, 2008

The American Dental Association’s principal publication, the ADA News, featured the College of Dentistry in its October 20th issue with an article titled, “Care on the Go” which showcases the  recent “back to school” event that partnered the Delta Dental Foundation and dentistry’s mobile clinic or “H.O.M.E. Coach.”

Launched in 2005, the H.O.M.E. Coach was originally funded by a donation from the Columbus-based Osteopathic Heritage Foundations, whose support enabled the Coach to begin providing dental health care to underserved children throughout the Columbus area. When the need for additional funding arose, that need was met by a donation of $450,000 from the Delta Dental Foundation of Michigan, Ohio and Indiana.

The gift was officially presented on May 9th at the College of Dentistry’s Annual Post College Assembly, but the celebration of that gift took place on August 28th, at a “back to school” event at Columbus’ Weinland Park Elementary School.

The event, which was publicized in a Columbus Dispatch newspaper article and an online video [.wav], was also covered by Columbus’ ABC News (WSYX) channel 6, and WNBS TV-10. Honored guests at the event included Ohio State President Gordon Gee, College of Dentistry Interim Dean Carole Anderson, Superintendent of Columbus City Schools Gene Harris, and Delta Dental of Ohio’s Marketing President Michael Clark.

Featuring interviews with Weinland Park Elementary School children who received dental treatment from the H.O.M.E. Coach’s staff that day, the “back to school” event drew an array of Columbus media representatives, and it was the focus of news articles in publications that included ODA Today, the Black Alliance for Educational Options in Ohio, Grantmakers in Health Bulletin, as well as the ADA News.

Speaking to reporters from the Columbus Dispatch and local television news stations, President Gee thanked the Delta Dental Foundation for its support and partnership. “We all appreciate this generous donation to the College of Dentistry’s H.O.M.E. Coach, which represents a great example of Ohio State’s service to the local community,” Gee said. “The University’s mission is to educate and to serve--and that service includes the kind of work that’s being done by this mobile dental clinic, which is improving peoples’ lives in Columbus and throughout Ohio.”
