On February 24th, dentistry's faculty, staff, and students joined Dean Carole Anderson and the Cultural Awareness Council for a screening and discussion of the acclaimed PBS documentary, "In Sickness and in Wealth," which examines the causes of socio-economic and racial inequities in health that exist throughout the U.S. The event featured the first episode of this documentary series, and Dean Anderson facilitated a discussion following the 57-minute program. Dr. John Kalmar Joins ADA Council on Scientific Affairs
Dentistry’s Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery John Kalmar has been appointed to the ADA Council on Scientific Affairs Advisory Committee that examines osteonecrosis of the jaw. As a council member, Dr. Kalmar joins a select group of health experts from such institutions as the University of Iowa's College of Dentistry, Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine, and the Mayo Clinic's Dental Specialties Department. This gathering of medical experts comprises an Advisory Committee that will monitor current scientific literature with the purpose of gathering new information related to medication-associated osteonecrosis of the jaw. Dr. Kalmar and the other Advisory Committee members will review medical policies that relate to dental evaluations that precede treatments for osteonecrotic jaw conditions, and they will collaborate on the development of periodic ADA Council reports on this topic.

American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology,
Kalmar also serves on the Research and Scientific
Affairs Committee for the
American Academy of Oral
and Maxillofacial Pathology, and he holds a position
on the editorial Board of Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine,
Oral Pathology, Oral Radiology and Endodontics.

Joseph Mess Wins ADEA/Johnson & Johnson Scholarship
D4 student Joseph Mess was recently chosen as a 2010 recipient of the American Dental Education Association's Johnson & Johnson Healthcare Products Preventive Dentistry Scholar award. As an ADEA/Johnson & Johnson scholarship winner, Joseph Mess is one of just twelve dentistry students nationwide who receive these awards that are presented annually to predoctoral students who demonstrate academic excellence in preventive dentistry. Scholarship recipients are given a cash award for use in their
professional dental studies. The awards for 2010 were presented
March 2nd at the 2010
ADEA
Annual Session and Exhibition in Washington, D.C.

SRG Selects Amy Hufnagle as "Student Researcher of the Month"
The College of Dentistry's
Student Research Group
(SRG) facilitates student-faculty research relationships, and it
helps dental students to identify and pursue their research interests.
The organization also recognizes outstanding student research projects
by selecting a "student researcher of the month." Hufnagle’s current research focuses on finding the mechanism for
heightened inflammation produced by treatment of Citrobacter
rodentium-infected intestinal epithelial cells with the
stress-induced hormone corticosterone.

MandiBall Celebration was an "Odonto Blast!"
The College of Dentistry’s Student Government Association (SGA) presented its annual MandiBall celebration on February 12th at the Columbus Atheneum on North Fourth Street. All students, faculty, staff, and alumni were invited to attend this annual event that promised to be an “Odonto Blast!” Sponsored by the SGA and the Dental Alumni Society, this year’s event featured music, hors d’oeuvres, a gourmet buffet, drinks and dancing, and a raffle for door prizes. The event was attended by dentistry’s Dean Carole Anderson and Ohio State’s President E. Gordon Gee. Special thanks to all faculty, staff and students who supported this event!

"Build-A-Snowman" Competition Winners Announced!
The first College of Dentistry “Build-A-Snowman” student competition took place on the lawn outside Postle Hall on February 10th, after several days of heavy snow blanketed the campus area. All students in the dental and dental hygiene classes were invited to participate in this 50-minute snow sculpture competition. The Dental Class of 2013 created a massive molar complete with a Class II prep. The Dental Class of 2012 created a mandible with two canine teeth, and the dental hygiene class of 2011 created a snow princess sculpture titled, “Cinderella goes to the Mandiball." Under the direction of Dr. Julie Holloway, several post-doc students in
the Advanced Prosthodontics Residency Program created a colossal
maxillary denture that won the competition. The sculpture also garnered
attention from both The Lantern and Channel 10 News.

26th Annual Research Day Winners Announced
The College of Dentistry’s 26th Annual
Research Day featured dental and dental hygiene
students, post-doctoral and Ph.D. students, residents,
and fellows who presented abstracts on an array of
cutting-edge research topics. Originally planned for
February 16th, the event was rescheduled for
February 24th, due to a rare snow day closure of The Ohio State

Dr. Charles Shuler Presents a Distinguished Lecture – April 7
The College of Dentistry’s Distinguished Lecture Series presents Dr. Charles F. Shuler, Dean of Dentistry at the University of British Columbia. Shuler, who holds a Ph.D. in pathology from the University of Chicago and a D.M.D. degree from Harvard University, focuses his research on clinical presentations of osteonecrosis of the jaw and its linkage to the use of bisphosphonate medications. Dr. Shuler’s lecture is titled, "When Oral Biology and Clinical
Dentistry Collide: Bisphosphonates and Osteonecrosis of the Jaws.” The
presentation will be held April 7th from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in room
1183 Postle Hall. (Lunch is provided.)

DSAC Announces Rho-Sigma Award Winners
Victoria Rexford (Dental Assistant in Restorative Prosthodontics) and Kenneth Herman (Research Assistant in Oral Biology) were honored with these awards that recognize their professionalism and their “pleasant demeanor that has a positive effect on the College.”
Rexford and Herman each received certificates of
recognition, and they were invited guests at a DSAC
celebration held in their honor.
