Program Overview
During the 48 month program, 17 months are spent on
off-service rotations. There
is also a 2 month rotation to Dublin, Ireland.
The oral and maxillofacial surgery inpatient experience is gained at
University Hospital, Grant Medical Center, and Nationwide Children's
Hospital. The full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery is
performed, including orthognathic surgery, temporomandibular joint
surgery, trauma surgery, reconstructive surgery, cleft palate
surgery, cosmetic surgery, and management of pathology. Outpatient
care is done primarily at The Ohio State University College of
Dentistry Clinics. Ambulatory general anesthesia for outpatients is
given two mornings per week. There is ample opportunity to learn
dentoalveolar surgery, and minor preprosthetic surgery, including
dental implants. Currently the OSU oral and maxillofacial surgery
service has one of the busiest surgical implant programs in the
nation.
During the on-service rotation there is a core of regularly
scheduled conferences. These conferences are designed to provide the
academic-didactic background for the clinical training. The
conferences include weekly Journal Club, Case Presentations, Oral
Pathology, Dentofacial Conference (with the Orthodontic Department),
Multidisciplinary Implant Conference, as well as a weekly lecture
series in basic and applied clinical sciences. The department also
participates in the Cleft Palate and Craniofacial Clinic which is
held weekly.
While the primary goal of the residency program is to provide
excellent clinical training, emphasis is also placed on research
activity. All of the full-time faculty have a major interest and
commitment to research. All residents are required to propose and
carry out a research project, upon completion of which, the resident
must prepare a paper for publication. An occasional resident may choose to devote additional time
for advanced research training, e.g. M.S. or Ph.D. The department encourages
such endeavors and will attempt to make the necessary special arrangements to
allow such activity.
Salaries range from $45,000 to $51,000 commensurate with the year of
training. No university fees or tuition are charged.
Health insurance and
parking fees must be
paid by the individual. Meals and housing are not supplied.
