Dr. Do-Gyoon Kim was born and raised in Korea. His undergraduate training was in biology at Yonsei University, Seoul, Korea. The training in the discipline of biology extended to the graduate school level with the same department. Soon after obtaining his master’s degree, he started working in industry at the Institute for Advanced Engineering, Daewoo Co., Korea. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY marked his next stop in his professional development in the interdisciplinary field of basic science and applied engineering. His Ph.D dissertation focused intensively in biomechanics of the bone-implant interface from the microscopic point-of-view.

Since finishing his Ph.D degree, he served as a post-doctoral research fellow in SUNY Upstate Medical University, Syracuse, NY. The attention of his research training extended to the macroscopic aspect of bone-implant biomechanics focusing primarily on an interfacial failure total joint replacements. After completed his projects in Upstate, he expanded his career to Bone and Joint Center at Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit, MI. His research topics are to determine tissue stress variability and strength in vertebral bone using a large scale FEA based on micro-CT images. As a research scientist and instructor at hospital, he conducted various clinical studies collaborating with orthopedic surgeons.

Dr. Kim has served as a moderator of ORS conference and a reviewer of several international academic journals including Bone, Journal of Biomechanics, ASME Journal of Biomechanical Engineering, Journal of Dental Research, Journal of Orthopaedic Research, Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research, Acta Biomaterialia, Annals of Biomedical Engineering, and International Journal of Dentistry. He reviews more than 20 manuscripts per year.

Dr. Kim has managed several grants (total amount of grants about $700,000.00) including AAOF Biomedical Research Award, OSU seed grant, dental implant corporate grant, and NIH grant.

Based on the previous research experiences, he expands his research areas in orthodontics and orthopedics. His research interests are:

1.      Mechanobiology of osteoporosis

2.      Viscoelastic mechanics of bone

3.      Mechanics of orthodontic tooth movement

4.      Degenerative joint disease (Osteoarthritis at TMJ)

5.      Tissue-Biomaterial Interactions (macro-, micro- and nano-levels)

6.      Bone Tissue Engineering including stem cell therapies
