Carl M. Allen, DDS, MSD
Director
Dr. Allen received his DDS from
Ohio State in 1975 and trained in oral and maxillofacial pathology
at Indiana University from 1978 to 1980 earning his MSD from Indiana
University. As a faculty member at OSU since 1980, Dr. Allen has
been active in seeing clinical referral patients as well as
participating in the biopsy service. He has been a Diplomate of the
American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology since 1983 and
completed a six-year term (1994-2000) as Editor of the American
Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology. He was President of
the AAOMP in 2004 and currently serves as a Director and President
of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology.
Dr. Allen has published over 110
refereed articles in dental and medical journals and has written
chapters dealing with oral disease for texts in the fields of
otolaryngology, microbiology, dermatology and surgical pathology.
One of his more significant contributions, however, is as a
co-author and co-editor of the textbook, Oral and Maxillofacial
Pathology by Neville, Damm, Allen and Bouquot, now in its third
edition. In addition to Director of Sterilization Monitoring
Service, Dr. Allen is Professor and Director of Oral and
Maxillofacial Pathology in the Section of Oral and Maxillofacial
Surgery and Pathology at The Ohio State University College of
Dentistry.
Karen K. Daw, MBA, CECM
Assistant Director
Karen Daw is an Authorized OSHA Trainer and a Certified
Environmental Compliance Manager. She moved from Honolulu, Hawaii to
Columbus, Ohio to attend The Ohio State University where she
received her BA degree in Communications. She loved college so much that she went on to earn two
MBA degrees with concentrations in Organizational Business and
Healthcare Management while working full time. Since joining the
College of Dentistry in 1999, Karen has received numerous recognitions for her contributions
to the University.
Karen is currently the Assistant Director of
the Sterilization Monitoring Service where she contributes regularly to the
SMS newsletter, presents on OSHA requirements to dental students and
edits various continuing education courses. She is a respected
speaker on infection control and sterilization monitoring and is also a consultant on
state and OSHA guidelines.
Laura M. Cotton, BA
Program Assistant
Laura has been a member of the SMS team since
2010. Born and raised in northern New Jersey, she worked in the
hospitality and restaurant management fields in Lancaster, PA before
moving to Columbus to attend OSU in 1996. While studying part-time,
Laura worked full time in event planning and also did stints as a
sorority house director and as a writer and editor for real estate
appraisal reports. She received her B.A. in English from The Ohio
State University in 2006 and came to work at the College of
Dentistry in 2008. In her spare time, Laura enjoys painting, reading
and following her beloved Cincinnati Reds.
Mei-Ling Shotts, BS
Laboratory Technician
Mei-ling attended Florida State University
earning degrees in Exercise Physiology in 2004 and Biochemistry in
2006. After graduation, she was asked to stay at Florida State as a
Senior Teaching Specialist. While at FSU, Mei-ling designed the
coursework and ran the labs for esteemed professors in Biochemistry,
Analytical Chemistry and Analytical Analysis departments and
co-published three Biochemistry lab manuals. In 2008, Mei-ling was
asked to teach Chemistry and English in Taipei, Taiwan at the Joy
American School; next, she did a one-year stint in toxin research at
the American Museum of National History in New York, NY. Her diverse
background and wealth of experience make Mei-ling a valued member of
the SMS staff.
