John R. Kalmar, DMD, PhD

John R. Kalmar, DMD, PhD is a Clinical Professor in the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and Radiology. Dr. Kalmar received his DMD from Southern Illinois University in 1979 followed by training in hospital dentistry from the UNC – Chapel Hill and training in oral pathology at Emory University.  In addition, he earned a PhD in Experimental Pathology from Emory in 1989.  From 1992-1999, Dr. Kalmar served on the faculty of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, University of Rochester as well as the Eastman Dental Center.  He joined the faculty at Ohio State in 1999 and served as the Graduate Program Director in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology from 2000 until 2011, when he was appointed Associate Dean of Academic Affairs.   He recently resumed the duties of Program Director in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and is the current President of the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology.  


Karen K. Daw, MBA, CECM
Assistant Director

Karen K. Daw is an Authorized OSHA Trainer and a Certified Environmental Compliance Manager. Karen moved from Honolulu, Hawaii to attend The Ohio State University where she received her BA degree in Communications the spring of 1997. Just prior to joining the SMS Team in 1999, she worked in the Emergency Department for OhioHealth at Riverside Methodist Hospital and soon afterwards became a Department of Labor Authorized OSHA Trainer. In 2003, Karen earned her MBA degrees with concentrations in Business Management and Healthcare Management. In addition to her role as Assistant Director, Karen serves on the Safety and Infection Control Committee for The Ohio State University College of Dentistry, is a respected speaker on infection control and sterilization monitoring and is also a consultant on state and federal guidelines with a focus on compliance.  


Rachel Flad, BS
Channel Coordinator

Rachel attended Defiance College earning a degree in Forensic Science with a minor in Mathematics in 2010.  During her time at Defiance, she was in the honors program, was recognized for her leadership skills by the university, and, received the Dean's scholarship for her academic performance. In addition, she traveled to Cambodia with the McMaster School for Advancing Humanity to test for high arsenic levels in drinking water in villages across the country.  Her results were published in the McMaster Journal and the protocol she established is performed by students in the program to this day.  After graduation, Rachel began working with the Target Corporation, and as Senior Team Leader, she was directly responsible for achieving sales goals for several departments under her charge. Her diverse background in sales and customer service make Rachel a valued member of the SMS team.
