The Surgeon General has identified oral health as the number one unmet health care need in the country for children and adults in underserved communities. The Ohio State University College of Dentistry is committed to being a leader in caring for vulnerable populations within the state of Ohio and meeting the needs of underserved communities while preparing student practitioners to serve diverse populations.
Community based dental education for dental students within the curriculum includes:
- The Ohio State College of Dentistry OHIO Project which has created and cultivated partnerships to provide dental care to underserved Ohioans in counties across the state.
- The Dental H.O.M.E. (Health Outreach Mobile Experience) Coach, an OHIO Project clinical site, which enables faculty-supervised dental students to provide basic dental treatment to approximately 2,900 children annually at Columbus City Schools and surrounding areas during regular classroom hours.
