DDS Residency and Costs
The cost of attendance increases in years two, three and four due to enrollment during Summer Term.
Residency
You must physically reside in Ohio by August, in order to be considered for in-state residency for the coinciding academic year. If you decide to move to Ohio prior to August, your "residency clock" will start at that time. In order for you to be considered a resident of Ohio you must meet the residency requirements one-year prior to the term you are desiring residency for. Example: If you desire residency starting with the first semester of your D2 (second year) year, you would want to be residing in Ohio no later than May of the year prior.
If you did not graduate from an Ohio high school, you must be able to show proof of your living arrangements with a valid date. If you are married and planning on your spouse working throughout the year, you will still receive residency if your spouse begins work before the start of the first semester in August.

Electric Handpieces
The College of Dentistry moved to electric handpieces beginning with the Class of 2022. In order to fully operationalize the use of the electric handpieces in the clinic pool, each student needs to purchase two handpiece kits. The first kit is purchased at the beginning of the D1 year in order for the student to use it during preclinical coursework. The second kit is purchased during the D2 year for student use in the clinic beginning the summer of their D3 year.
-
- More than 50% of American dental practices use electric handpieces and this number is continuing to rise.
- Many dental schools throughout the U.S. educate their students with electric handpieces, including 27 other dental schools using the same system (Bien-Air) that we have selected.
- Electric handpieces provide consistent torque, smoother cutting and greater precision than other handpiece options.
-
D1 Electric Handpiece Kit
During Orientation, D1 students will receive one Bien Air electric handpiece kit that includes: one MX2 Micromotor, one high speed attachment friction grip, one low speed latch type contra angle, one laboratory straight nose cone, and one carrying case. You will also receive cleaning and lubrication sprays.
D3 Electric Handpiece Kit
D2 students will purchase one additional Bien Air MX2 Micromotor and one high speed attachment friction grip for use in the student clinics beginning in the summer of the D3 year.
-
The fee will be itemized on your statement of account as the "Electric Handpiece Kit Fee" and will be assessed in the semester you are enrolled in the Operative 5 lab course.
-
- Your Bien-Air electric handpiece kit will be yours throughout your dental education. Your electric handpiece components will be reconditioned and yours to keep following graduation.
- You will be responsible for cleaning and maintaining your electric handpiece components during your D1 and D2 years.
- To ensure patient safety, both sets of handpieces will become part of a clinic pool at the end of the D2 year. Dispensing and Sterilization personnel will manage the cleaning, lubrication, sterilization, storage and maintenance of the handpieces for patient care use until graduation.
- The college will provide electric handpiece components for use at no additional charge should your equipment need repair while you are a student.
- Your electric handpiece components will be covered by a warranty throughout your four years as a dental student.
