Dr. Juan P. Castro is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology at The Ohio State University College of Dentistry. He earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree from Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá, Colombia, and completed a Master of Science in Oral Science and a Certificate in Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology at the University of Iowa. He is board certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology (ABOMR) and is currently pursuing a Master of Business Administration (MBA) at the Tippie College of Business, University of Iowa.
Dr. Castro is an active member of multiple professional organizations, including the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, the American Dental Association, the American Dental Education Association, and the American Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research.
His professional background includes service as a general dentist with the Colombian Air Force, clinical experience in private practice as an oral and maxillofacial radiology specialist, and academic appointments at Pontificia Universidad Javeriana and the University of Iowa College of Dentistry prior to joining The Ohio State University.
Dr. Castro represents the third generation of a family dedicated to oral and maxillofacial radiology, continuing a legacy that spans over 90 years since his great grandfather, a pioneer in this specialty in Colombia and Latin America.
A passionate lifelong learner and educator, Dr. Castro has extensive experience as a lecturer and presenter in continuing education programs at regional, national, and international levels.
Dr. Castro’s research interests focus on advancing the field of oral and maxillofacial radiology through innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration. His work explores the applications of Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) in diverse dental specialties, as well as the use of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) to enhance diagnostic capabilities in dentistry. He is particularly interested in the integration of artificial intelligence and machine learning tools for improving diagnostic accuracy, digital workflow optimization, and clinical decision-making. Additionally, he is committed to investigating evidence-based methods and strategies that enhance dental education.
