Faculty and Student Win Awards at Health Sciences Art Show
Dr. Sehrish Javaid and dental student Emily Powell shared their artwork in this year’s Health Sciences Art Show. The show took place in Hamilton Hall and featured pieces from students, faculty, residents, and staff from the health sciences colleges and the OSU Wexner Medical Center.
Dr. Javaid received the Dean’s Award for her acrylic painting, Beautiful Building. The award recognizes talent and skill as an artist.
“I was drawn to creating this particular view because it brings together a sense of safety and hope,” said Dr. Javaid, who joined the college in January. “The strong, focused walls represent structure and security, the spaces in our lives where we feel grounded and protected. At the same time, the window opens outward, symbolizing possibility and hope, offering a glimpse of what lies beyond.”
This was the second time Emily Powell presented her artwork. The second-year student won the Dean’s Award last year. This year, she won the People’s Choice Award for her oil and sculpture piece, The Art of Becoming. Her work was selected through a public vote among all submissions in the show.
“To me, art means freedom of speech and expression, she has said previously about painting. “Art has always given me my voice, even when it was time to choose a career in dentistry – which is artistic in many ways.”
