Orthodontic Resident Sheng Chris Wang, DDS, Wins AAO Research Award
Dr. Sheng Chris Wang is a second-year resident in the Division of Orthodontics' advanced education program. For his outstanding basic science research, he recently won the 2023 William R. Proffit Resident Scholar
Award that is presented by the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO). The highly competitive award showcases research conducted by orthodontic graduate students or residents who conduct clinical or basic science research as part of their post-doctoral education and training.
Dr. Wang's award-winning project is titled "Mechanosensitive ion channel Piezo2 initiates force induced tooth movement in mice." The research explores the causes of the feeling of pressure that many orthodontic patients experience after initial archwire placement, and the potential relationship to the ion channel Piezo2. Dr. Wang's research advisor is Ching-Chang Ko, DDS, MS, PhD, Chair of the Division of Orthodontics.
